Alfred trained initially at Eastbourne School of Art, and later specialised in theatre design at the Central School in London. He feels he gained enormously from his time as a scenic artist working in Birmingham Repertory Theatre, enjoying the challenge and excitement of working on a large scale.

Alfred’s first one-man exhibition of drawings, paintings and prints was held at the Camden Institute in 1983. This led to sales to Australia, Holland and Ireland, in addition to those in the UK. Since then he has exhibited extensively in London and nationally, experimenting with oils, acrylic, etching and screen-printing, although it is in watercolour that the fluidity of his style becomes most apparent. However, he also has plans to re- explore lithography.

On three occasions he has been invited by Kentmere House Gallery to be artist-in- residence at the York Early Music Festival, the latest in 2014. Alfred was overjoyed to be invited, as he is a devotee of early-music & sings in a choir in London, and so was delighted to be able to attend each of the concerts & to work back-stage.

Commissions from owners of private houses in Yorkshire followed, & Alfred also painted several views of The King’s Manor, one of the buildings of the University of York. One of these was purchased by University and hangs in the Refectory at The King’s Manor.
